The start of the opening round !
Organizers of Middle East Karting Cup (MEKC) are proud finally to announce the start of 1st opening round of this exiting CIK-FIA series in Sharm El Sheikh, after an especially problematic birth, not least the parts and chassis of some drivers arriving late on the morning of day 2 of the opening round due to a mix up by DHL, the freight forwarding company. This issue put the organizers in the difficult position of having to cancel the first days track sessions for all participants.
Nevertheless, the championship has finally started with 28 drivers from 9 countries on 5 different makes of chassis. Other problems initially faced by organizers was the change of dates and venues for the championship, change of race organizers at a very late stage prior to the opening round, this was compounded by a controversy over Israeli participation (or lack of) in the championship for the Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt (ATCE), more than 12 drivers canceling their participation in the last week for various reasons. But in spite of all this and more the 1st round in Sharm El Sheikh at 17th January 2008 has been finally launched successfully against all odds. With attendance of more then 45 members from press and 4 TV channels (Channel 2, Orbit, Hurra, Gear One) and high profile government officials including the Governor of South Sinai, Gen. Hani Mettwali and the officials from the Ministry of Tourism including the Minister Garanah, Egyptian Tourism Authority Head, Mr. Amro Al Azabi and ofcourse all the board members of the ATCE.

The race is on for the search of the Middle East's champion, the MEKC looks forward to inspiring future champions to compete at the highest levels in internationally sanctioned professional motor sports.
